The faculty from the University of Michigan’s Mary H Weiser Food Allergy Center has released a video to help parents and caregivers of children with food allergies prepare for the coming school year.

The video titled “Food Allergy Explained: Basics, Back to School & Beyond” runs 13 minutes and broaches topics of interest to the food allergy community including the importance of an emergency plan, how to recognize a serious reaction, how to administer various brands of epinephrine auto-injectors, and how to decipher the labels on food products.Click to visit sponsor

“We’ve created this video to provide a quick but comprehensive, evidence-based introduction to the various aspects of food allergy and returning to school,” said Dr James R Baker Jr, director of the Mary H. Weiser Food Allergy Center (MHWFAC), Michigan Medicine’s food allergy research hub. “Viewers can watch all the way through or skip to a specific section for a quick refresher.”

Presenters, including the project’s co-author, Dr Jing Yi Sun, provide easy-to-understand messages on topics including what happens during a food allergy reaction, managing anxiety and safely transitioning back to school. The video is segmented by topic, so viewers can easily navigate to topics of immediate interest.

“In light of the increased popularity of virtual visits and new challenges facing families going back to school, we wanted to create a quick but comprehensive video that provides evidence-based patient education directly from clinicians,” said Sun. “We hope that this video will help both new and experienced patients not only navigate life with food allergies better, but also gain an increased awareness for the team of support available to them at Michigan Medicine.”Click to visit sponsor
